CTP Showcase—Transcontinental Beauceville:
The Sunday 4000 plates are such that they are difficult to handle manually, with a plate size of 46" x 75" x .015". Therefore, this system is designed to run plates automatically from the CTP unit all the way through the processors and rotate them into the post bake oven and gum units, and eventually pass them into an in-line shear and bender. After the plates have exited the Bender, a barcode is read and the plate is sorted by the individual job number to the specific bin.

Transcontinental Printing Beauceville
The system consists of a Kodak/Creo Magnus 6383 running Kodak thermal gold plates. Because the Sunday 4000 has a very small bend tab length, which is required for the mini gap or micro gap of the Sunday 4000 press unit, the CTP gripper does not allow the laser to travel all the way to the image area on the plate; therefore a shear is required to allow full gap to gap printing. After the plate is imaged the gripper margins for the CTP are sheared away. This system has a shear which uses a vision register technology to align the plate to a set of marks. Once the marks have been registered via cameras, the plate is vacuumed to the surface, the lead and tail are sheared, and punching for the four corners of the plate takes place.
The system then passes the plate automatically from the shear to the bender where the plate is bent according to the manufacturer's specifications and then passed to the stacking units, which will sort plates via the job number using a barcode 39 image on the plate. The sorting units are designed to position the plates in a vertical position, either to the right for the lower units of the press or to the left for the upper units of the press. By sorting in this fashion the operator does not have to rotate the plates 180° prior to mounting them on the cylinder. This system also has a plate rotator, which will orient the plate correctly to the Bender and shear unit. The plate rotator is specifically designed to handle the plate from below, thereby not touching the surface image of the plate. This system was specifically designed for Transcontinental printing to fit their specific needs in a space, was designed to be right next to the press.
